SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — After a perfect start on the first leg of their three-city, nine-game trip out West, the Cubs ran into a bump in the road in Tuesday night's series opener in San Francisco.

They also fell further behind the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central race in the process.

The Cubs led Tuesday's game, 2-1, in the fifth inning but couldn't hang on, falling 5-2, as Justin Verlander finally won at home for the first time since joining the Giants. He was backed by Matt Chapman's sixth-inning home run and an earlier drive by Wilmer Flores.

The Cubs had an off-day Monday following a three-game sweep of the Los Angeles Angels over the weekend to start their road trip. That pulled them within five games of the Brewers for first place in the NL Central, but the Brewers beat the Arizon
