The Home Office has reportedly halved the time refugees are given to leave asylum hotels after their case to stay in the UK has been approved, in a U-turn which has stoked fears of rising refugee homelessness this winter.
From 1 September, the “move-on” period is being cut from 56 days to 28 days. Just last month Home Office minister Angela Eagle confirmed to parliament that a 56-day trial , introduced in December 2024 and set to expire at the start of July, was being extended until the end of the year.
The last time the “move-on” period was cut, from 28 to seven days in 2023, it sparked a wave of refugees forced on to the streets as they could not secure new accommodation in time. Big Issue reporting revealed that it had caused homelessness among refugees to triple.
