CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - More than 140,000 students went back to school on Monday in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools district.

More than 6,000 of those students leave the classroom every day with no place to call home. And that number only includes those on record.

Homelessness is a growing problem in the Carolinas.

Nearly 35,000 public school students are listed as homeless in the state, according to the North Carolina Department of Human Services. In South Carolina, the Interagency Council on Homelessness reported nearly 14,000 children listed as experiencing homelessness.

Educator and filmmaker Dr. Tommy Watson was once one of those homeless children. Now he’s an advocate for children experiencing housing instability.
