Court rules Sun Life cannot use severance agreement to block disability benefits claim

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. , Aug. 26, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Kantor & Kantor, LLP announced a significant appellate victory in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit on behalf of client Kristen Schuyler , who is challenging Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada's denial of her long-term disability benefits. The appellate court vacated the lower court's ruling, finding that Schuyler did not knowingly or voluntarily waive her rights under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) when she signed a separation agreement with her former employer.
