CASTRO COUNTY, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) - The Texas Department of State Health Services reported a case of West Nile virus was confirmed in a horse in Castro County, the second confirmed instance of virus activity in the Texas Panhandle in 2025.

According to a Texas county summary map published by Texas DSHS, a case of West Nile virus was recently confirmed in a horse in Castro County. As noted in previous reports, West Nile virus is spread through a bite from an infected mosquito and can infect humans, birds, mosquitoes, horses and other animals.

The case in Castro County is the second instance of confirmed West Nile virus activity in the Texas Panhandle in 2025, as noted by DSHS, after it was found in donated blood during a screening in Randall County. The virus activity in Randall County was
