A gunman opened fire through the windows of a Minneapolis church Wednesday, shooting several children, killing at least two , who had gathered for a Mass with their school during their first week back from summer break, authorities said.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara called the circumstances surrounding the shooting "sheer cruelty" and "cowardice."

"Firing into a church full of children is absolutely incomprehensible," he said.
