This year’s Vancouver International Film Festival kicks off with a film about making a film .

The festival a.k.a. VIFF , running Oct. 2-12, will officially open on Oct. 2 at 6 p.m. at the Vancouver Playhouse with American director Richard Linklater’s Nouvelle Vague. Set in 1959, Linklater’s film is a cinephile period crime comedy/drama that follows the making of Jean-Luc Godard’s (Guillaume Marbeck) debut 1960 classic Breathless (À Bout de Souffle), that starred Jean Seberg (Zoey Deutch) and Jean-Paul Belmondo (Aubry Dullin) as complicated lovers in Paris.

“It’s a film that really does speak to the exhilaration of creation and manages to both be kind of a history lesson while capturing that kind of spark of inspiration that created one of the timeless pieces of cinema as well,”
