GARY, W.Va. — The state Public Service Commission wants to find out if a McDowell County water is distressed or failing.The PSC announced Monday that it’s opened a case into the town of Gary’s water system.

The order said the system has been the target of many complaints in connection with water pollution and extreme water loss that have put customers under a boil water advisory.

According to the state Bureau of Public Health, the system has “high levels of iron, manganese, alkaline metals, and other contamination sources” and “has 76 percent unaccounted-for water loss.”

Gary, like other areas of McDowell County, were hit hard in the Feb. 15 flood.
