(WKBN) - While Ohio has not submitted a waiver yet to ban sugary drinks for those using SNAP benefits, a group looking at the process could submit a request soon. However, other states have already taken advantage of the opportunity.

The way it works is that states must submit a waiver to the U.S. Department of Agriculture to ban certain foods. This gives states the opportunity to fine-tune the federal-run program to the needs of each individual state.

Right now, 12 states have submitted waivers that have been approved to ban some food items. Most of the waivers include soft drinks, but some include candy and prepared desserts.

For instance, Colorado has banned the purchase of soft drinks. Iowa has banned all taxable food items, except for food-producing plants and seeds.
