In his Aug. 19 op-ed, “Trump’s biggest foreign policy mistake,” Fareed Zakaria delivered a powerful indictment of President Donald Trump’s decision to impose a 50 percent tariff on Indian goods, which lumps India in with pariah states such as Syria and Myanmar.

Zakaria is correct on the substance. This is a reckless and unnecessary assault on one of America’s most vital strategic relationships. It disregards decades of bipartisan diplomacy and threatens to undo the extraordinary goodwill between the world’s two largest democracies.
