WASHINGTON — A federal judge ordered the U.S. government on Wednesday to repay more than $2,000 in fees and restitution to a woman convicted in connection to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, writing the law required it because her case was still on appeal when she was pardoned by President Donald Trump.
“Sometimes a judge is called upon to do what the law requires, even if it may seem at odds with what justice or one’s initial instincts might warrant,” U.S. District Judge John Bates wrote in his order. “This is one such occasion.”
Bates ordered the government to repay $2,270 to Yvonne St Cyr , a 57-year-old Idaho resident and former Marine Corps drill instructor convicted on six counts, including two felony counts of civil disorder, in connection with the riot.
