IONIA COUNTY, Mich. — Tuesday in Ionia County, a crash on I-96 involving four vehicles left the freeway closed for over five hours.

The crash occurred around 5 p.m. on westbound I-96 near Sunfield Highway in Orange Twp. One person died as a result of the crash, according to the Ionia County Sheriff's Office (ICSO).

ICSO said their preliminary investigation indicated that traffic on the freeway had been slowing down and merging into one lane as a construction zone was ahead.

While traffic was slowing and merging, ICSO said a semi-tractor-trailer struck an SUV. The impact of that crash forced the SUV off the roadway while the semi continued on, colliding into the rear end of a second SUV. That second SUV was pushed forward from the impact and pinned between two semi-tractor-trailers.
