YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Mont. – Biologists will begin capturing grizzly bears in Yellowstone National Park as a part of the effort to document the recovery under the Endangered Species Act.

Documenting Yellowstone’s grizzly bear population became increasingly relevant in July 2025, when the House Committee on Natural Resources passed a bill to deregister grizzly bears in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.

Arguments for and against the bill tended to focus on whether or not the grizzly bear population was stable enough to exceed the regulations on the endangered species list as described in the Grizzly Bear Recovery Plan .

Agency biologists with the Interagency Grizzly Bear Study Team will start captures on September 1 and will continue through October 15.
