BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Wednesday marked the final day of the season for butterfly releases at Lost River Cave.

Members of the community came out to the cave for three separate releases today to introduce these butterflies to the habitat. The various butterflies arrive in a sleeplike state. Once the butterflies are placed in the palm of your hands, they will slowly start to wake up due to the heat and the environment around them.

When asked about the process of releasing the butterflies, Lost River Cave Philanthropy Director Katie Cielinski said it’s “really cool.”

“The butterflies come in an artificial state of hibernation, and we wake them up together. The warmth of your hand and the sunlight and the air help them wake up and eventually flutter off into the habitat,” said Cielinski.
