MONROE COUNTY — A 46-year-old man died when his SUV overturned amid "extreme fog conditions" near Valmeyer on Tuesday morning, the Monroe County Sheriff's Department said.

The victim was Nicholas D. Wittenbrink of Valmeyer, the department said in a news release.

The department said the incident took place about 6:15 a.m. in the area of Fountain and Levee roads.

According to the release, the vehicle left Levee Road during the fog. When the driver attempted to overcorrect, the release said, the SUV skidded sideways before overturning down an embankment.

"Evidence suggests he was not wearing a seatbelt and and was ejected during the crash," the department said. The extreme fog contributed to the accident, the department said.
