(CNN) – A California family is suing OpenAI and its CEO over claims that ChatGPT advised their teen son on his suicide.

The parents of 16-year-old Adam Raine filed the lawsuit on Tuesday.

They allege ChatGPT contributed to their son’s suicide on April 11 and even offered to write the first draft of his suicide note.

According to the suit, Adam started using the AI chatbot in 2024 to help with his schoolwork.

Within months, the teen expressed his anxiety and mental distress to ChatGPT.

The family says the bot allegedly gave Adam specific advice about suicide methods.

In addition, the Raines claim ChatGPT isolated Adam from family members.

The family is seeking unspecified financial damages.

They also want a court order that would require OpenAI to add age verification for all ChatGP
