Certain traffic medians in Houston are now no-go zones for sitting, standing or walking.

In an 11-2 vote, the Houston City Council on Wednesday approved a rule "prohibiting sitting, standing, and walking on median strips measuring six feet or less in width and on divided roadways where no median strip exists."

"Medians were never meant to be a place for people to walk, sit, stand," council member Mary Nan Huffman said in support of the measure. "They leave individuals inches away from fast-moving traffic with no protection."

People are still allowed to stand on a median momentarily while crossing the street in the most direct route possible. There are also exceptions for emergencies, when someone is rendering aid, or when following directions from a pea
