On Aug. 18, Kourtni Kerr, 31, was found dead on the floor of the Warren Police lockup while waiting to be transferred to the Macomb County Jail. Family and friends want to know why, reports Mitch Hotts of the Macomb Daily.

"I know her history and her involvement with drugs,” said her mother, Barbara Kerr, 60, of Warren, in an interview with the Macomb Daily. “But she was still my daughter. It was their (the police department’s) job to protect her while she was in their custody.”

Her family says Kerr was walking with a male friend around Woodward Avenue and State Fair Street in Detroit about 6:30 a.m. on the last day of her life. They were on their way to get a beverage at a gas station, according to the publication.
