Thousands of people in Connecticut are getting ready to celebrate the Hindu festival of Lights, known as Diwali. For the first time, the state is recognizing this holiday with a new law that goes into effect in October.

Lamont, legislators, and members of the Indian community attended a bill signing ceremony at the state capitol on Wednesday. In the legislation, the 15th day of Kartik in the Hindu lunar calendar is proclaimed as Diwali. Celebrations can be held in the state capitol and elsewhere.
