Rafael Mayorga, a Frederick man, was sentenced to 22 years, 2 months in prison for a 2023 crash that resulted in a Montgomery County police officer losing his legs.

Authorities said that in October 2023, Mayorga, then 19, was racing along Interstate 270 at speeds exceeding 100 mph. Police began a chase because they believed he was driving under the influence.

Sgt. Pat Kepp tried to intercept Mayorga using stop sticks. Police said Mayorga intentionally drove into Kepp, leaving him in critical condition and resulting in the loss of his legs.

A jury found Mayorga guilty of several charges, including second-degree assault. Police said Kepp and Mayorga had multiple previous interactions and believed the incident was intentional. The jury did not convict Mayorga of first- or second-degree att
