TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) -- Frustrated parents called out Hillsborough County school leaders over their handling of banning books.

Several parents spoke during the school board meeting on Tuesday and expressed concerns that the district is not following the proper process before pulling books off school shelves.

"As a parent, I am disgusted," said Tabitha. "As a school board, you were supposed to represent every parent, not just the loud, hateful minority."

This comes amid mounting pressure from the state. In June, state education officials grilled Superintendent Van Ayres over the issue and demanded he remove various books from school shelves, calling them "pornographic."

"There are materials that are clearly pornographic. They're not in a gray area," said former Education Commissioner Mann
