CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday approved updated COVID-19 vaccines for the fall season, but with stricter eligibility guidelines. This is raising questions for families as the school year begins and flu season nears.

Under the FDA’s new approval, the updated COVID-19 shots are recommended for adults 65 and older, as well as for children and adults with at least one medical condition that increases their risk for severe illness. The change narrows access compared to previous years, when the vaccine was widely recommended across the general population.

The new decision comes as multiple agencies now differ in their guidance on who should receive the shot, leaving some parents unsure of how to proceed.

Let’s verify what families should know.
