The Rochester City Council has approved an expanded sanctuary city policy that includes protections for members of the LGBTQ+ community and spells out consequences for city workers who violate those guidelines.

Rochester has been a sanctuary city since 1986. Councilmember Mary Lupien first described the expanded legislation in May as simply, "protections with teeth."
