The government could close asylum hotels within a year – by granting temporary residence to people who are “almost certain” to be recognised as refugees.
This proposal – published by the Refugee Council today (28 August) – comes after weeks of protests and counterprotests outside these temporary accommodation facilities.
The charity has urged the government to grant “permission to stay for a limited period with full security checks” to people from Afghanistan, Eritrea, Iran, Sudan and Syria who were in the asylum system as of 30 June 2025.
The move would “cut costs, restore order and protect both refugees and the communities they live in”, said Enver Solomon, the charity’s chief executive.
