MADISON (WKOW) -- A report from the Madison Metropolitan Sewerage District says nearly six million gallons of wastewater has spilled into the environment in Madison.

The wastewater spread into the wetlands near the Nine Springs Wastewater Treatment Plant on Madison's south side.

The sewerage district was alerted of the incident when a bicyclist passing by on the Capital City State Trail saw bubbles coming up from the ground on Friday, Aug. 22.

Executive Director of Madison Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) Eric Dundee says they were quick to act on the leak.

"We did find that there was a crack in the pipe, so we quickly started to shut down the pipes and the pump stations to avoid any more spill, rerouting the system, and then started correcting the issue," Dundee said.
