RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - As schools in Central Virginia get back into the swing of things, Governor Glenn Youngkin said the academic bar will be set high because he knows students can meet the challenge.

At a news conference on Wednesday, the governor, alongside state leaders in education, all praised the strides that students are making to claw back from poor post-pandemic results.

“Virginia, the Commonwealth of Virginia, the cradle of democracy, had the lowest definition of proficiency in the nation. Parents were pushed out of their children’s education. We had some of the lowest in-person learning time in the country,” Gov. Glenn Youngkin, (R) Virginia, said.

Youngkin said the state faced many challenges educating students during and after the pandemic, including chronic absenteeism.
