MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. — The City of Milledgeville took a significant step toward addressing the water infrastructure problems Wednesday, with the Public Facilities Authority approving $55 million in bonds to fund major upgrades to the city's aging water treatment plant and distribution system.

The bond approval comes as the Central Georgia city continues to grapple with water system failures that have plagued residents and businesses for more than a decade, with problems dating back to at least 2010.

Just two weeks ago, a water main break forced the closure of Baldwin High School and affected parts of Georgia College & State University campus.

City Council Member Walter Reynolds said the city is committed to immediate action once funding is secured.
