A prominent lawyer revealed on Wednesday that President Donald Trump's recent stunt could backfire on him.
Trump recently posted a letter on Truth Social where he said he was removing Federal Reserve governor Lisa Cook from her job "for cause." Cook and her attorneys have said they will challenge her termination in court and that she is not resigning.
Norm Eisen, an attorney and former diplomat, argued on a recent episode of progressive YouTuber Brian Tyler Cohen's eponymous show that Trump will struggle to defend his move unless there is a job-related reason to fire Cook. Otherwise, the courts may hand him another loss, even if it reaches the Supreme Court, Eisen argued.
"I don't think the courts are going to stand for it," Eisen said. "It stinks to high heaven."
"I think this is one where there's strong recent Supreme Court precedent from the Roberts court that helps them," Eisen added.
Trump said during a news conference on Tuesday that allegations of mortgage fraud against Cook are reason enough to fire her. His administration has also accused New York Attorney General Letitia James and Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA) of mortgage fraud.
Eisen described the mortgage fraud allegations against Cook as "baseless."
"No wonder she and her lawyers are saying they're going to litigate it," Eisen said.
"She should litigate this matter because what Donald Trump is doing once again is he's abusing the rule of law," Eisen continued. "He's turning us into a police state, not the United States. We don't have presidents who criminalize their grudges against their political adversaries. That's not what America is about."
