South Dakota political and religious leaders are reacting to a mass shooting at a Minneapolis catholic church.

Two children were killed and 17 injured after a shooter fired into the windows of Annunciation Church and School in the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis while students were worshipping at mass on Aug. 27, according to USA Today.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara told USA Today the shooter approached the outside of the church building and fired inside toward the children sitting in pews. The children killed were ages 8 and 10, and two of the 17 injured are in critical condition.

South Dakota Gov. Larry Rhoden took to his official X account hours after the shooting, calling the violence "horrific."
