A tragic accident occurred on Wednesday morning when a school bus rolled over just west of Geelong, resulting in the death of 12-year-old Milla Killeen. Milla was a student at Christian College Geelong's middle school campus. The incident took place during a routine school run, prompting a significant emergency response. More than 20 children were transported to hospitals, with some suffering serious injuries.
Milla died at the scene of the accident. Mathilda Joubert, principal of Christian College Geelong, expressed the community's grief in a tribute posted on the school's website. "Her kindness, warmth and joy impacted all who shared her company," Joubert wrote. "She was a treasured member of our college community, and her loss is deeply felt by all staff, students and our Christian College families."
Milla was in Year 7 and had represented her school in basketball championships. According to Victoria Police, she resided in the nearby town of Teesdale. A 16-year-old boy from Inverleigh was also seriously injured in the crash and was flown to the hospital.
The bus was carrying 28 students when it failed to navigate a left-hand bend on the Hamilton Highway at Stonehaven around 8:20 a.m. After hitting a rail, the bus rolled over. In addition to the 16-year-old boy, nine other students were taken to the hospital by ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries, while 14 more were hospitalized for observation.
The bus driver, a 76-year-old man from Hamlyn Heights, was also taken to the hospital. He has been interviewed by police and released pending further inquiries. Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Lyneham described the crash site as a "very confronting scene."
The bus was transporting students to the three campuses of Geelong Christian College, which include junior, middle, and senior schools. Education Minister Ben Carroll stated that two children remained in the Royal Children's Hospital and nine were at Geelong University Hospital. He assured that the school would receive all necessary support as it copes with this tragedy. An investigation into the accident is currently underway.
