About 6.7 million people age 30 and over lived with their grandchildren in 2021, according a U.S. Census Bureau repoprt last year. Nationally, about 32.7% of grandparents living with grandchildren under the age of 18 were responsible for their care.

The study, available at census.gov, opens by noting “trends toward delayed marriage, reduced fertility and increased life expectancy have reshaped the American Family in myriad ways. For grandparents specifically, this could mean fewer grandchildren overall but more time to spend with them. In fact, over 80% of grandparents say they play an important role in their grandchildren’s lives. This includes serving as a source of wisdom, providing a moral compass, and connecting grandchildren to their family’s roots — among many other roles.”
