A new pedestrian plaza showcasing the character of Springdale as a "special and unique community" opened last week with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The plaza, situated on a formerly vacant lot near the Zion Prospector rock shop and the Best Western Plus, at 680 Zion Park Boulevard, features seating, restrooms, water features, scenic views and will soon include interpretive panels highlighting Zion Canyon's geology and history.
The property once was the site of a 1950s-era home that served as the lobby for the Canyon Ranch Motel. Officials said the building was demolished due to extensive termite damage. The site was initially considered for a history center, but plans shifted, leading to the creation of the plaza.
