Labor Day weekend in Metro Detroit offers no shortage of things to eat between the backyard barbecues, scrappy community festivals and corporate-sponsored affairs that are jam-packed with food vendors.

A new tradition is returning, however, that is making this weekend a time to celebrate the versatile and diverse sandwich. Detroit Sandwich Party is happening at Eastern Market's Shed 5 Sunday for the second year.

I attended the inaugural event in 2024 and loved the concept: free admission and half-sized sandwiches from a variety of vendors for $3-10 each. You eat a few there and wrap some up and shove them in your bag to take home. There's a bar, too, and places to sit, so you can hang out, or explore other shops and restaurants in the market for a bit and come and go as you wish.
