BARRY COUNTY, Mo. (KY3) - A state highway bridge in Barry County is crumbling into Jenkins Creek. Engineers with the Missouri Department of Transportation say that although the bridge has a poor rating, it’s safe for traffic.
“It looks like stuff is caving off the side. You just don’t want to take a chance,” said BJ Van Twuyver
Van Twuyver says the structure on Highway 39, just off Farm Road 2080, is dangerous.
“I followed a dump truck across the bridge, a chunk of that concrete fell off, and a piece fell on the road. I thought, well, that’s odd,” he said.
The retired, disabled veteran says he has no choice but to travel across this part of the highway, often holding his breath.
