Kyiv experienced a significant missile and drone attack late Wednesday night, resulting in multiple casualties and extensive damage. Ukrainian officials reported that the assault began around 9:30 p.m., triggering air raid sirens across the capital and other regions of Ukraine.
Timur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, confirmed the attack on Telegram, stating, "Kyiv is under massive attack." He later reported that at least one person was killed and several others injured, with debris from the strikes impacting residential buildings.
Andriy Yermak, an advisor to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, described the scene as chaotic, saying, "Many people are under the rubble, [including] children." He noted that rescuers were working tirelessly while drones continued to fly overhead.
The assault involved at least four Russian MiG-31 jets armed with Kinzhal missiles, which targeted various locations in Kyiv and other western regions. The strikes damaged residential buildings, schools, and offices, with significant destruction reported in the Darnytskyi district, where a five-story apartment building collapsed.
Yermak highlighted the urgency of the situation, stating, "We extinguish [flames as] buried people are screaming from under the rubble." Photos from the scene showed flames erupting from high-rise buildings and debris scattered across the streets.
The barrage is part of a broader pattern of Russian strikes on Ukrainian cities over the past week. Earlier this week, Ukraine's air force reported that Russia launched 59 drones into the country, with 47 intercepted or suppressed.
In response to the ongoing conflict, President Zelenskyy is scheduled to meet with members of the Trump administration in New York on Friday. Discussions will focus on security guarantees for Ukraine to deter future Russian aggression. Zelenskyy emphasized the need for a strong international response, stating, "The task is to accelerate as much as possible so that this too becomes a lever – a lever of influence: the Russians must see how seriously the world is determined and how dire the consequences will be for Russia if the war continues."
As the situation unfolds, Kyiv continues to seek support from global leaders to secure agreements for a potential meeting between the Russian and Ukrainian presidents, as well as to establish NATO-like security guarantees for Ukraine in the post-war landscape.
