Hundreds of thousands of young people received GCSE or A-level results or graduated from university this summer. Many will be considering a gap year. And more than half (56 per cent) of “gappers” want to use the break to travel, according to a 2022 survey by Teach Abroad Direct.

Far-flung destinations such as south-east Asia and Central and South America will feature on many wish lists. All travel comes with risk, of course, but some of those dangers are not widely reported by authorities and businesses.
