A top Florida official has said that “Alligator Alcatraz,” a state-run immigration detention facility, will likely have no detainees within days, the Associated Press reported Wednesday.
Kevin Guthrie, the executive director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management, wrote in an email dated Aug. 22 that “we are probably going to be down to 0 individuals within a few days,” according to an exchange reviewed by the outlet.
The latest reported development comes as Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) and President Donald Trump’s administration look to challenge a federal judge’s order from less than a week ago that blocks the expansion and demands the shuttering of the center built in the middle of the Florida Everglades by late October, or within 60 days.
