Some of the people who made Greensboro memorable simply put a couch and chairs in their business like Merritt White did at his Recycles Bike Shop.
Described as part downhill cycling thrill-seeker and part business owner, White, 47, was a fixture in the College Hill area near downtown and UNCG, offering a prime spot for "dirt-jumpers" and other riding enthusiasts to sit and trade stories and compare scars.
He was the heart of the local cycling community, according to two-wheel enthusiasts.
"Sometimes you don't think of the impact someone has on your life, but this man did," his friend Shawn LaCross posted to Facebook. "He was one of the good ones."
The Greensboro native died Aug. 23, after a long illness "faced with courage and grace," according to his obituary.
