Catching up on the pile of newspapers that had accumulated while I was away this summer, one story that really stood out to me was the July 27 article about the film series, “Chief of War” (“Jason Momoa honors Hawaiian history with ‘Chief of War,’ shining a light on isle storytellers,” Star-Advertiser) . What a great accomplishment!

I love the authenticity of the show and the fact that many of the actors are Native Hawaiian. It is sad, though, that most of the filming for the series had to be done in New Zealand because of Hawaii’s lackluster film industry incentives. Political leaders need to do more to support Hawaii-based filming, especially when the creative content is focused on authentic Hawaiian history and culture.
