This weekend, Hawaii once again becomes the center of history. Aboard the USS Missouri, where World War II ended 80 years ago, we will commemorate peace and honor sacrifice, but as we reflect, we must also tell the stories that too often go untold, particularly those of Maui.

Certainly, every major base on Oahu played critical roles in both the recovery from Dec. 7, 1941, and the preparation for Western Pacific deployment. On the Big Island, tens of thousands of Marines from the 2nd and 5th Divisions trained at Camp Tarawa near Waimea. On Kauai, Army divisions sharpened their skills in preparation for combat.
