We can note with immense pride that Canada was one of two countries that actually retaliated against U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs – a rare show of national dignity in today’s geopolitical climate. But as Prime Minister Mark Carney (reasonably) drops some of these countertariffs as an olive branch to reset trade talks, it’s worth asking whether Canadians would hold their ground again if this gambit fails to achieve a deal.
My hope is that we would. But my gut says we would not.
