GIBSONBURG, Ohio — A Fremont man was killed when his car went off the road and crashed into a barn Wednesday afternoon.

Around 4:35 p.m., Ernesto Chavez, 44, was eastbound on U.S. 20 just west of State Rt. 51 in Sandusky County, when he went across the center median and off the north side of the highway. Mr. Chavez struck a mailbox and a barn before his car came to a stop.

Mr. Chavez sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash and died at the scene, according to the Fremont Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol. His passenger, a 10-year-old boy, suffered serious injuries and was taken to Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo.

Both Mr. Chavez and the child were wearing seatbelts.
