NEW ORLEANS — Two people have died after eating Louisiana oysters infected with a . WBRZ reports the oysters were harvested in Louisiana before being served at restaurants in both Louisiana and Florida.

State health officials said 14 others were also infected with Vibrio vulnificus a serious bacterial infection, after eating the oysters, .

So far this year, Vibrio vulnificus has caused 34 infections and six deaths — the highest total Louisiana has seen in the past decade.

“It’s just prolific right now,” said Jennifer Armentor, molluscan shellfish program administrator with the Louisiana Department of Health. She shared the update during a meeting with the Louisiana Oyster Task Force on Tuesday.
