SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The Cubs failed to capitalize on an opportunity to get a game closer to first place in the NL Central on Wednesday night, as another day ticked off the dwindling MLB regular-season calendar.

And while there's still a month left in the season, the Cubs are running out of chances to chase down the Milwaukee Brewers.

As the Cubs were continuing their road trip out West in San Francisco late Wednesday night, the Brewers had just finished off a 3-2 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks in Milwaukee, leaving the door open for the second-place Cubs to pick up a game on the first-place Brewers.

But Rafael Devers and the Giants had different ideas. Devers homered twice and doubled in a run on the way to five RBI, as the Giants pulled away from the Cubs for a 12-3 victory.
