HARVARD, Ill. — A man was seriously injured after his car was struck by a train in Harvard early Thursday morning, fire officials said.

According to officials from the Harvard Fire Protection District, the crash occurred just before 2:30 a.m. along the railroad crossing on McGuire Road, near Irish Lane.

Crews were first called to the scene following a report of a car struck by a train, but when they arrived, crews were unable to find the train and vehicle involved.

It was eventually determined that the car had actually been struck about a quarter mile north of the crossing, around a bend in the tracks.

Due to the rough terrain, fire crews and paramedics got onto a UTV and navigated down to the scene, where they found the vehicle fully engulfed in flames.
