WHAT TO BINGE ON TV Stream On! Le Carré’s ‘Smiley’s People’ ends the hunt for Smiley’s nemeses

By Peter Hummers

The TV miniseries Smiley’s People is adapted from the 1979 spy novel by John le Carré, and is a sequel to 1974’s Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy . The original novels bookend the “Karla Trilogy.” (The second of the three, The Honourable Schoolboy, was deemed too expensive to film, taking place in the Orient). In Smiley’s People , self-effacing superspy George Smiley is called out of retirement to investigate the death of one of his old agents.

Could this lead to a confrontation, pray tell, with Smiley’s nemeses, Karla and …? (it is the plural form of nemesis.)
