PORTALES, New Mexico -- It had been more than eight years since owners of a Portales daycare were accused of leaving two little girls in a hot van, which killed one and seriously injured another. Maliyah Jones was the child who died, but her mother had not given up on seeking justice.

However, her mother, Erika Tafoya, was not expecting the plea negotiations to go the way they seemed to be.
