A smoky fire among approximately 200 hay bales continues to burn near Clayton in Kent County under the watchful eye of the Delaware Forest Service.

The hay bale fire broke out around 5 a.m. on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, on Millington Road (Route 6).

Fire officials decided later in the day to expedite the burning process in order to reduce the amount of time the hay would sit and smolder.

A specialized piece of fire equipment, an airboat from South Bowers Fire Company, was brought to the scene to assist in the burn.

The bales are expected to smolder for just a few days, instead of a few weeks.
