SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- On Wednesday, August 27, community members in Springfield came together for a dedication to the legacy of Milly Sawyers on the Springfield-Greene County African-American Heritage Trail.
While her story was uncovered only a few years ago, Sawyers' unique story is one of the first examples of an enslaved person suing for their freedom in the state of Missouri, right here in Greene County.
"It blows me away. It blows my mind," said community entrepreneur Dr. Lyle Foster. "It's incredible because we didn't know her story."
Sawyers' marker is the Springfield-Greene County African-American Heritage Trail's 10th marker, highlighting her contribution to local history.
