A BBC actress and comedian died penniless after decades of fame and appearing in hit ITV sitcom Nearest and Dearest for five years. The late Hylda Baker made her stage debut at just 10-years-old and was producing her own stage shows by 14.
However, she first became a household name on the BBC show Good Old Days in 1955 which led to her landing her own television series, Be Soon in 1957, followed by her own sitcom The Best of Friends, in 1963. Hylda was one of the most successful comics of her time in Britain during an era where most comedians were men. Perhaps her most famous role however is her portrayal of Nellie Pledge in Nearest and Dearest from 1968 until 1973.
